Brew not added to path

Today I carefully went through all the installation steps for homebrew on one of my students macs only to discover that brew was in stalled but not added to the zsh PATH. Is this a known flaw of the installer? Im not a macos specialist but do kniw my way around in a *nix system so I ended up adding the path to brew manually ussing vi to edit .zshrc file? I really didnt have time find the root cause of this behavior as we had more stressing things to do and as brew is working now there is no way to replicate this issue.

Is this a common error? What would be a good remedy or messages during install to look out for?

At the end of the install script brew tells you how to add it to the path, did those instructions not work or did you miss them?
